In any 'organization', the 'values' that people cherish and use to improve their daily ordinary lives acts as a glue aligning people together.
A national flag represents such values for a nation. The Indian National flag symbolizes our progress is shared and hence we have to be ready to give up to each other (saffron, sacrifice), we have to feel one in heart across (white, peace), our words and actions have to be synchronized for our welfare (green, prosperity). In short it tells us that our unity in our diversity is our strength.
There is a parallel in Rg veda, where a Yajna (sacrifice) is being done by several priests. Each one is performing different roles and chanting different mantras. Rtviks determine at what time what actions to be performed, Adhvaryu sets up the yajna altar and the fire and chants the Yajur veda, udgAtr chants the sAma veda, Hotr offers the oblations and chants the Rg veda etc etc.
So the priests performing the Yajna tell Agni (the fire in the sacrifice), they are well aligned before (the yajna) itself. They realize their direction/progress is shared, so their words (mantras) are synchronized (though different) and they feel one in heart across. When they perform diverse actions, their thoughts and minds are still synchronized and they offer sacrifices together, for all. They tell the Agni, by enabling them to synchronize their words, thoughts, hearts and mind, Agni becomes their great companion (for their unity).
This unity (amidst all the diversities) applies not just to the Indian Nation, but any country and any organization where people come together to share their destiny and progress. As we increasingly get globalized and inter-connected, this need of Unity applies to entire Human race and in fact all life and resources on planet Earth.
On the 75th anniversary of Indian Independence, the Song of Unity from Rg veda Mandala 10 Hymn 191 in tamil, essence in english.
